Job Title: Occupational Therapy Assistant MJH
Job Summary
Administers skilled occupational therapy treatments to restore or maintain the patient's/resident's ability to perform activities of daily living, improve work readiness, promote play/leisure activities, or enhance educational performance. Works under the direction and supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
Essential Job Functions
- Administers treatments that align with the plan of care and practices within the scope of the occupational therapy state practice act (i.e., ROM, strengthening, neuromuscular facilitation, splinting, edema control, functional activities, coordination, low vision and cognitive retraining, visual perceptual motor training, ADL's, groups, participant, and caregiver education)
- Implements discharge planning, as outlined in the plan of care, assuring equipment needs, home exercise program, and follow-up care are addressed appropriately and documented in the medical record
- Assesses whether continuation of skilled therapy aligns with regulatory criteria
- Reports observations of performance and response to treatment to the occupational therapist
- Attends both departmental and IDT (interdisciplinary team) meetings as established by the occupational therapist
- Participates as an active member of the IDT providing updates regarding the needs or progress of patients as determined by the occupational therapist
- Attends and participates in committees and family member meetings
- Provides in services as needed to participants and staff members
- Provides supervision, guidance and assistance to rehabilitation aides and students in their delivery of services and reports as indicated to OT regarding pertinent issues.
- Identifies potential problem situations, intervenes appropriately, and communicates such events to supervisor
- Performs related non-clinical services necessary to maintain the efficient operation of the OT department, and adjusts schedule as required
- Assists OT with ordering adaptive equipment, durable medical equipment, and supplies and assists with issuance of DME
- Consults with other disciplines as directed regarding participant concerns and activity adaptations
- Demonstrates willingness to work across clinical service lines, including inpatient, outpatient, and PACE as needed
Job Requirements
Education:
- Associates Degree preferred
Experience:
- One year experience in occupational therapy and experience working with the geriatric population preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Florida licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant
- Current BLS certification
Abilities Required
- Current knowledge of safety issues needed in the treatment of patients, especially regarding body mechanics and body substance precautions to protect self, patients and personnel working with therapist
- Effective written and oral communication skills Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Good problem solving and clinical judgment skills
- Demonstrate ability to take initiative, be adaptable and work well independently
- Be well organized, flexible, dependable, and punctual
- Ability to work well with staff, individuals, and participants of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office, Excel)

Physical Requirements
- Demonstrates the ability to perform the following tasks without posing a threat to the health and safety of those involved (employee, co-workers, caregivers, patient): lift, turn, move, position and transport patients in and out of bed, chair, bathtub, wheelchair, lift, etc.
- Sedentary tasks related to job 20%
- Physical tasks- approximately 80%
- Demonstrates the ability to perform a minimal assist transfer. Minimal assist transfers are defined for purpose of this document as the ability to lift and control 50 pounds
- Exerts up to 100# of force occasionally, 50# frequently and 20# constantly. (Heavy physical demand)
